Gastric acidity

Definition

traitement Gastric acidity

The gastric hyperacidity is usually manifested by a burning sensation. It may follow ingestion of some foods or a state of stress and causes reflux and ulcer formation.

The gastric acidity is a consequence of gastroesophageal reflux. It's a common condition that occurs when leaks of stomach acid go back up of the stomach into the esophagus. Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux are : feelings of heartburn, chest pain, burning, discomfort after eating, an unpleasant and bitter taste in the mouth caused by stomach acid which coming up into the mouth, difficulty to swallowing. The symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, can vary from mild to severe. The reflux esophagitis is caused by a combination of different factors. The most important factor is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter which does not work properly. The esophageal sphincter acts like a valve. Normally, it opens to let food into the stomach and closes to prevent the stomach acid from going back up into the esophagus. In case of gastroesophageal reflux, the sphincter does not close properly and then allows the acid to leak upwards, outside of the stomach. The gastroesophageal reflux is a digestive disease very common and can affect people of all ages, including children. The known risk factors include : being overweight or obese, pregnant, a diet high in fat. The treatments against gastric acidity are generally good and most patients respond well to treatment. However, relapses are common. About half of people see a return of symptoms after one year. Consequently, some people may need, over the long term, medications to control stomach acid. The most serious cases of gastric acidity can trigger a series of complications, such as esophageal ulcers (open sores that develop in the lining of the esophagus), bleeding of the esophagus, esophageal cancer.
